Institute Presentation

The history of the Charité
Founded in 1710, the Charité Hospital is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe; preclinical and clinical neuroscience being on main area of research. Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Campus Charité Mitte is Prof. Dr. Andreas Heinz since 2002. Leading researchers in the field of neurobiology of mental disorders work in the department and set the basis for one of the most powerful German university departments of psychiatry and psychotherapy.

Major research activities
The major mental disorders, like schizophrenia, affective and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders and degenerative disorders are studied using behavioural, neuroimaging, genetic, neuroendocrine as well as preclinical methods. In addition to studies on the neurobiological basis of mental disorders and their treatment, studies in transcultural psychiatry and psychotherapy and mental health care are performed.

Summary of experience relevant to IMAGEN
The department has established an expertise in different areas combining genetic research and multimodal neuroimaging including fMRI, MRS, DTI and PET. Within national and international cooperations, human gene-neuroimaging studies are performed to further characterize the neuronal and genetic basis of emotion, reward and other behavioural features relevant for neuropsychiatric disorders.
In 2000, the Berlin Summerschool “Psychiatry as a Science” was initiated and every year 15 highly motivated and talented psychiatrists form South Eastern European countries participate in a one week of intensive course curriculum in the theory and practice of modern scientific approaches in the field of psychiatry. The participants are supervised in their ongoing research projects and the development of new scientific studies and successfully established collaborative international networks.
