WP06 - Neuroimaging

WP06 will comprise 7 European Neuroimaging centers (Mannheim, Hamburg, Berlin, London, Nottingham, Dublin and Paris, see WP4) that will acquire functional and structural MR data in a large (2000+) sample of adolescents. The centers are all equipped with state of the art neuroimaging equipment.

The objectives of WP6 are as follows:

  • Acquiring a large integrated structural and functional MRI dataset to allow analysis of the structural-functional correlations within the dataset.
  • Analysis will be conducted in cooperation with WP 07. This data will be acquired in an identical fashion from multiple sites and will require explicit standardization with the input of WP 05.
  • Recruiting of participants in conjunction with WP 04.
  • Relating findings in this dataset to external measures of adolescent development, environmental exposure (WP 04) and current neuropsychological performance on tasks which relate to impulsivity (WP 02).
  • Relating findings to genetic information in a coordinated hypothesis testing approach using candidate genes identified from strategies developed in WP 01, 03, 08.

WP leader is Professor Dr. Christian Büchel. Christian Büchel is Head of the Department for Systems Neuroscience, Universtitätsklinikum Hambrug-Eppendorf (UKE) and director of the neuroimaging center “NeuroImage Nord” funded by the German government (BMBF). He has a longstanding expertise in affective neuroscience. Using fMRI he was among the first to investigate the cortical and subcortical mechanisms of aversive Pavlovian conditioning, which has recently been extended to incorporate models of formal learning theory.
